After some worrying delays, due to closed motorways and travel difficulties on the Friday before Lyn and Alex's departure, by Saturday morning everything was finally packed up and ready to go.
A convoy of the two family cars headed off to Heathrow Airport in traditional English weather, rain and low cloud, something not seen for many weeks and hence welcomed for a change!
Following a rural route through Oxfordshire, Heathrow was reached by the "check-in" time of 11am with no problems, the only excitement being the sighting of a pair of Red Kites (rare birds of prey) hunting for a meal.
Two friends from university, already at the airport to see them off, were located, luggage checked in and flight details confirmed. This done there was just time for a quick coffee and a few moments to relax before boarding.
At the Departure Gate final farewells were exchanged and the odd tear shed before the couple went on their way to board the Quantas flight for the long first leg of their journey to Bangkok in Thailand.
Bon Voyage, Lyn and Alex. Thank you to friends Nick and Steve for joining the families to wish them well on their expedition. Good on you lads.
The next update will appear when a report is received from the travellers.
